Suomi antoi etsintäkuulutetulle KGB-everstille viisumin

Media_httpwwwalphagro_jecii

Liettua on antanut eurooppalaisen pidätysmääräyksen KGB:n eversti Mihail Golovatovista, jota syytetään Vilnan veriteoista vuonna 1991.

Voina Tests Boundaries of Art

Media_httpimg0liveint_brcia

Russia has a deep tradition of avant-garde art that has tested the boundaries of art and expression. The work of the art group, Voina ("War"), is part of this tradition. As Russia's political and economic system continues to centralize and grow more sclerotic, corrupt, and reliant on natural resources, this group is seeking to shake things up, juxtaposing humor and the absurd next to the grayness of Russian official life. The performance and public guerilla art of this collective is dedicated, in their words, to the "destruction of outdated repressive-patriarchal socio-political symbols and ideologies."

Indict KGB, Blacklist Putin!

Media_httpwwwrussiabl_sjyav

We, the undersigned, urge that Vladimir Putin, Russia's Prime Minister, be placed on a "No Entry List" in the European Union and the United States. Strong sanctions by the West are vital and urgently needed in order to stop the threat coming from Putin's KGB clique. Putin and his cronies are not above international law. His abuse of human rights in Russia is not just a Russian problem.

Under Putin's rule, Russia has become a "sovereign democracy" and a "controlled democracy." Putin has turned Russia into a kleptocracy. Putin and his cronies are above the law. Is it purely coincidence that hundreds of the sharpest and well-informed critics of the regime (politicians, journalists, human rights activists) have been murdered over the ten years of Putin's autocracy?

FSB Halfway to Absolute Power

Media_httpwwwljplusru_hcpem
The lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, today passed on third reading a measure that dramatically expands the powers of the FSB, a measure that Russian rights activists are urging President Dmitry Medvedev not to sign. Under the terms of the measure, the FSB in cases where there is no evidence of a crime can declare any Russian of being engaged in "impermissible actions which create the conditions for the committing of a crime," a declaration that opens the way to arbitrary actions against people.

FSB to shut down websites at will

Media_httpresursbyupl_ebiup

Russian prosecutors may get to shut down web sites over extremism charges for an unlimited time if the State Duma passes new legislation drafted by the Federal Security Service (FSB), Vedomosti reports. According to the draft, internet service providers will be obliged to shut down web sites within three days upon receiving a “motivated letter” from prosecutors.

Websites will be able to return online only after a court rules that they did not violate anti-extremism laws. Even if a website wins its case, it may be kept offline for up to a month from the day it was suspended. The FSB legislation is to be a part of a raft of amendments to the 1995 information law that is being prepared by Russia's Communications and Press Ministry.

Is Russia Orwell's "Animal Farm"?

Media_httpwwwkommersa_yhzie

Russia is like George Orwell's Animal Farm, where the pigs set the rules, writes independent journalist Dmitry Sidorov, former bureau chief for Kommersant Publishing in Washington, D.C., in Forbes.

Since Putin became Russia's undisputed leader, he has rapidly eliminated critique and dissent. The Kremlin has tens, or hundreds, of thousands of sheep capable of endlessly bleating "Putin and Medvedev are good, the opposition is bad." For hundreds of years Russia has known no other rules, making every resident mimic the pattern of elite behavior no matter how much money he had or didn't have. Together they stole, and stole big, throughout the history of the country.
