Russia Making a Mockery of Human Rights

Media_httpiimgurcoml5_grnfb

The Russian Foreign Ministry has published a report on the human rights situation in various countries. The starting point of the report is one of double standards: The report only focuses on human rights in countries, with which Russia is looking for discord.

The report devotes several pages to Finland. It seems that Moscow regards Finland as a similar target for pressure and part of its “near abroad” as the Baltic States. The report directs accusations against Finland using the same sort of demagoguery as against the Baltic States.

Khodorkovsky: Western Realpolitik Big Mistake

Media_httpwwwfaznetm7_jwfca

The West has paid too little attention to the human rights situation in Russia, the former head of the now defunct YUKOS oil company, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, said. Speaking in a written interview with four Western newspapers -- The Wall Street Journal, Le Figaro, Il Mondo, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, -- Mr Khodorkovsky blamed the West for passivity in monitoring the respect of human rights in Russia. Such a position will cost dearly to both Russia and Europe, he warned.

Edvins Snore: Legacy of Soviet Communism

Media_httpwwwsovietst_zrfgl

Latvian political scientist and researcher Edvins Snore (Edvīns Šnore), director of the documentary film, The Soviet Story, gave a talk on the phenomenon of Soviet Communism at an event organised by the Finnish organisation, Pro Karelia, in Helsinki on 6 June 2011. Below, the full text of Mr Snore's talk:

I want to thank the organisers of this event for inviting me to take part. I am delighted to be here in Finland and to speak about a subject, which is important to the Baltic people, which is known in Finland also, but which is less known in the rest of Western Europe. That subject is Soviet Communism and its legacy today.

EU-Russia Civil Society Forum in Prague

Media_httpwwweurussia_bbbfb

On 28-29 March 2011, civil society actors from across Europe and Russia will gather in the Czech capital, Prague, for a meeting of the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum. The forum will serve as a venue to facilitate interactions between civil society institutions in the EU and Russia and could be used as a platform to develop a joint agenda and to support networking, exchanges, and implementation of joint initiatives and projects. The forum is not conceived as a formal institution; instead, it should be regarded as a framework for enhanced cooperation, an informal "meeting place" for joint action.

No visas between EU, Russia in 2020?

Media_httpvasinetuplo_efeof

The leaders of Russia, Germany, and France issued a joint statement paving the way for a visa-free agreement between Russia and the European Union. Dmitry Medvedev, Angela Merkel, and Nicolas Sarkozy expressed the hope that the Russia-EU summit in December 2010 would see progress in bilateral talks on scrapping visas. "We will work with Russia in an atmosphere of trust especially on the issue of visas," Sarkozy told a press conference after talks with Medvedev and Merkel. He said visas between Russia and EU could be abolished in 10-15 years. Medvedev said the process should have its "road map."

Moscow has made visa-free travel between Russia and the EU a foreign policy priority. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rebuked the EU in late September 2010 for dragging its heels on the issue, saying that Russia wanted a "clear answer." Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi backed the plan in July 2010, but said several EU countries opposed it. Finland's Foreign Minister, Alexander Stubb, has also expressed Finnish support for visa-free travel between the EU and Russia. Russia submitted a draft agreement on scrapping visas at the Russia-EU summit held in Rostov-on-Don on 31 May 2010.

Where Is Russia?

Media_httpimgfotkiyan_kqrgg
"We are not a member of the EU, but we are a European country," said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in an interview with Western journalists on the eve of the G-20 summit and a key meeting with President Barack Obama in Toronto. His words are worth thinking about.

The Russia we know today has been looking for its place in the world ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union 20 years ago. Stripped of the shell of Soviet empire, the country’s identity has been in flux. The search is at once geopolitical, philosophical and profoundly psychological.
